Dental Insurance

Here at D Smiles Family Dentistry, we’re glad to accept most types of dental insurance, and we’re happy to assist you in understanding and and maximizing your benefits. We never want you to stress about whether you’ll be able to afford necessary oral healthcare. To help you get started on taking advantage of your dental benefits, we’ve provided this handy and simple guide on how insurance works.

DENTAL INSURANCE: THE BASICS

Every insurance policy is a little different, but there are some terms that you need to understand regardless of what’s contained in your policy’s fine print:

  • In-network: This describes a dental practice that has a contract with your insurance company. They have pre-negotiated prices for various treatments, resulting in savings for both the insurance company and their policy holders.
  • Out-of-network: These are dentists who have not entered a contract with your insurance provider. However, such dentists may still accept your insurance and file claim forms for you.
  • Premium: The amount of money that you and/or your employer provides to your insurance company each month to keep your policy active.
  • Deductible: The amount of money that you must pay to your dentist out-of-pocket before your insurance kicks in. Not all insurance plans have a deductible.
  • Annual maximum: The highest amount of money that your dental insurance will pay each year to help you afford treatment.

The vast majority of dental plans operate on a calendar year basis. Every January, you must start over again with your deductible. That is why we always encourage patients who have not reached their annual maximum to come in toward the end of the year for a checkup; if you need any procedures, you’ll be able to undergo them before your benefits expire.

It’s important to note that most dental insurance plans cover 100 percent of the cost of preventive care, including cleanings, checkups, and an annual set of X-rays. Sealants and fluoride treatments may also be covered. For other types of dental work, such as fillings and crowns, insurance typically pays for 50 to 80 percent of the cost. Be sure to check your policy so you understand what is and what is not covered.
