Dental Checkups and Cleanings

MAINTAINING A HEALTHY SMILE FOR LIFE

When it comes to maintaining a healthy smile for life, dental hygiene is key. Our team works hard to keep your smile healthy, but we typically only get to see you twice a year. The other 363 days of the year, your oral health and hygiene are up to you. By combining effective in-office and at-home oral hygiene routines, we can help you keep your smile healthy and beautiful. Call our office to find out more or schedule an appointment with the caring D Smiles Family Dentistry team. We welcome patients from Haymarket and surrounding communities to visit our Gainesville dental office.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A TYPICAL CHECKUP AND CLEANING?

The first potion of your biannual appointment is your checkup. Dr. Do will thoroughly examine your teeth, gums, existing dental work, and other oral structures for any problems, such as cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer. Depending on the state of your oral health, we can work together to come up with a personalized treatment plan to get your smile as healthy as can be.

After your exam, Dr. Do will hand you over to our dental hygienist, who will use special tools to remove built-up plaque and tartar from on and between your teeth and along your gumline. Afterward, we’ll clean your teeth with a special polish that not only removes unsightly stains from the surfaces of your teeth, but also temporarily makes it harder for bacteria to attach themselves to your pearly whites. Additionally, we can provide you with tips to help better manage your oral health at home.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO VISIT THE DENTIST?

More often than not, we recommend coming in to see us for a checkup and cleaning twice a year, or once every six months. However, you might need to schedule an appointment more often if you have a history of poor oral health. A few other reasons for more frequently needed visits include:

  • Tobacco use
  • Gum disease
  • Cancer treatment
  • Pregnancy (which increases the risk of gum disease)
  • Certain health conditions that jeopardize your immune system, like diabetes or HIV/AIDS

At your appointment, Dr. Do can evaluate the state of your oral health to determine just how often you need to visit us for dental checkups.

WHY ARE DENTAL CHECKUPS AND CLEANINGS SO IMPORTANT?

Of course, we encourage you to brush and floss every day at home, but the truth is that these practices simply aren’t enough to maintain a healthy smile. Regular cleanings are necessary in getting rid of plaque, which contributes to a multitude of oral health problems, such as gum disease and tooth decay. They also remove surface stains from your pearly whites, allowing them to shine a little brighter.

Dental checkups are just as important to your long-term oral health. More often than not, dental problems like cavities don’t display noticeable symptoms, such as pain, until severe damage has already been done and extensive treatment is necessary. By visiting us every six months, Dr. Do can detect these issues long before they require serious, sometimes costly procedures to treat.

Lastly, regular checkups and cleanings can prevent you from developing general health problems. Gum disease in particular has been linked to other issues like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, liver cancer, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and birth complications in pregnant women. By attending regular cleanings and getting gum disease treated in a timely manner, you can prevent all kinds of health problems.
